Pune Set to Become India’s Next Growth Engine as ₹16,701 Crore Road Projects Get Underway.

In a major push towards solving Pune’s worsening traffic congestion and supporting the city’s long-term development, the Maharashtra government has accelerated infrastructure projects worth ₹16,701 crore. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that with a network of elevated highways, ring roads, and decentralized urban planning through the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Pune is poised to emerge not only as Maharashtra’s growth hub but also as one of India’s leading economic growth engines.

The announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony for three elevated highway projects, jointly organized by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation, the Public Works Department, and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari presided over the event, while several ministers, MPs, MLAs, and senior public representatives were also present.

Speaking about Pune’s future, Fadnavis emphasized that the city’s rapid population growth and industrial expansion demand forward-looking urban planning. The state government has therefore initiated an integrated development plan covering Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the wider PMRDA region.

He said the government is not only constructing roads but also planning them with future metro expansion in mind. By incorporating metro infrastructure during the construction of elevated roads, the state expects to reduce future infrastructure costs by nearly 40 percent.

The Chief Minister announced that the government has allocated ₹7,500 crore for the Pune–Shirur Elevated Corridor and nearly ₹4,000 crore for the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur Elevated Corridor to significantly reduce traffic congestion on these busy routes.

He also highlighted an ambitious water management initiative under which 100 percent of Pune’s wastewater will be treated and recycled, ensuring a sustainable solution to the city’s future water requirements.

Major Infrastructure Plans for Pune

Fadnavis outlined several key projects that will transform Pune’s transport and urban infrastructure over the coming years:

• Construction of the **173-km Outer Ring Road** and the **86-km Inner Ring Road** is progressing rapidly, with completion targeted within the next two years. These roads will divert heavy vehicles away from the city and ease urban traffic.
• A **twin tunnel through Dive Ghat** is planned to connect the proposed **Purandar International Airport**, providing seamless road and metro connectivity.
• To reduce pressure on Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, **new integrated townships** will be developed under PMRDA to encourage balanced population distribution across the metropolitan region.
• A **36-km circular elevated corridor** is planned within Pune city to improve internal traffic movement and reduce congestion.
• With financial assistance from the **World Bank**, Pune will implement a project to **treat and recycle all of its sewage**, helping restore the city's rivers and lakes while securing long-term water sustainability.
• Considering Pune’s hilly terrain and surrounding ghats, the government is also exploring an extensive **underground tunnel network**, inspired by the concept of an "underground city," with support from international consultants to enable faster and more efficient transportation.

The state government believes that these large-scale infrastructure investments will not only improve mobility and quality of life for residents but also strengthen Pune’s position as one of India's fastest-growing economic and industrial centres.
