₹1,000 Crore Business at Risk: Traffic Crisis Forces 20 Companies to Consider Moving Out of Chakan MIDC.

Twenty companies are planning to relocate to Khandala as traffic congestion, poor roads, water shortages and inadequate infrastructure continue to hurt operations, putting ₹1,000 crore in business turnover and 4,000 jobs at risk.
Chakan MIDC is a leading automotive manufacturing hub in the country. The area hosts 750 companies ranging from small to large, generating an annual revenue of ₹32,000 crore. Chakan MIDC spans 7,000 acres, with the surrounding industrial zone covering an equally vast area. However, traffic congestion has been escalating in the Talegaon, Chakan, and Ranjangaon MIDC zones over the past few years; the problem has reached a critical level in Chakan MIDC specifically, due to its proximity to Pune city. This congestion has become a source of distress for workers, company owners, executives, and the general public alike. Consequently, 20 companies operating in Chakan MIDC have decided to relocate.
The Shikrapur Chakan Talegaon route connects to the old Pune Mumbai Highway, while the Pune Nashik Highway runs through the heart of this MIDC zone. The presence of the MIDC has attracted numerous companies to the area. Traffic has been steadily increasing because the same roads are shared by industrial vehicles and public traffic. The congestion is exacerbated by the movement of large container trucks on roads that are too narrow to accommodate them, compounded by the lack of alternative routes for these heavy vehicles. Commuters often find themselves stuck in traffic for up to three hours during morning and evening peak times; this situation has driven the 20 companies to plan their relocation out of Chakan.
Losses incurred by companies due to traffic congestion:
1) Failure to receive raw materials on time.
Timely receipt of raw materials, auto parts, and other industrial supplies is crucial for many companies. Delays in the arrival of trucks and containers caused by traffic congestion disrupt the production process.
2) Delays in transporting finished goods.
Finished goods from Chakan MIDC are dispatched to customers, automobile companies, and other industries across the country. Getting stuck in container traffic disrupts delivery timelines.
3) Increased logistics costs.
Trucks spending more time than usual on the road leads to higher fuel consumption, increased driver hours, additional toll expenses, and rising vehicle operating costs.
4) Impact on 'Just in Time' production.
Chakan is part of a vast automotive manufacturing ecosystem. Many companies rely on the timely receipt of components. The delayed arrival of a critical component disrupts subsequent production schedules.
5) Increased container and truck turnaround time.
Instead of making multiple trips in a single day, trucks and containers remain stuck in traffic for extended periods, thereby reducing logistics efficiency.
These 20 companies are planning to relocate to the Khandala area in Satara district, and they have formed an association. Representatives of the association have inspected the site in Khandala and have initiated administrative procedures to acquire the land. If these companies relocate, it will impact a business turnover of ₹1,000 crore and could leave 4,000 employees facing unemployment.
Speaking about the situation in Chakan, company representatives stated that they have emailed the Chief Minister three times regarding this issue, yet the government has taken no steps to resolve it. Furthermore, employees often fail to reach work on time for their shifts because they are stuck in traffic for hours, and they face the same ordeal while returning home. This traffic congestion prevents containers from reaching manufacturing zones on schedule, causing significant financial loss to the companies.
A representative stated that companies are relocating from Chakan not merely due to increasing traffic, but also because of poor road conditions, inadequate power supply, water shortages, a lack of basic amenities, and frequent accidents.
Acknowledging the impending relocation of companies, the Industrie’s Minister has ordered the Industries Department to take immediate, necessary decisions. “Samant announced the approval of funds amounting to ₹100–150 crore to address issues related to traffic, space, and infrastructure in Chakan. He is personally overseeing the process of engaging directly with entrepreneurs to understand their concerns and make appropriate decisions. Samant also remarked that some individuals are politicizing the issue of companies leaving the area”.
Government measures to address Chakan's issues:
1) MIDC CEO Dipendra Singh Kushwah and Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi instructed officials to ensure the completion of road repairs, parking arrangements, encroachment removal, and National Highway repair work by August 31.
2) Removal of illegally parked heavy and multi-axle vehicles and clearance of encroachments along the Shikrapur Chakan Talegaon and Pune Nashik highways.
3) Conducting joint reviews and ensuring coordination among key agencies MIDC, PMRDA, NHAI, and the Public Works Department (PWD) to resolve these issues promptly.
4) Special planning by engineers from MIDC and the Town Planning Department to ensure the systematic development of the industrial area; this step has been taken in anticipation of the area's future expansion.
BlackRock is the world's largest investment and asset management company. The company's market capitalization stands at approximately $164 $175 billion. However, it manages client assets (AUM) exceeding $14 $15 trillion a figure that surpasses the GDP of many nations.
Blackstone Inc., a global firm, has a market capitalization of around $175 billion (approximately ₹14.8 lakh crore) and manages assets (AUM) worth over $1.3 trillion. Meanwhile, major companies such as Bajaj Auto, Mahindra, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Sany India, GE, Gabriel, Spicer, L'Oréal, Air Liquide, Philips, and Bosch are currently operating in the Chakan MIDC area. These large enterprises require robust infrastructure, yet adequate infrastructure has not yet been developed there.
To prevent companies from relocating out of Chakan, the government has directed officials to resolve these issues. The question now remains: will officials address these problems promptly? And if these issues are not resolved, will the companies relocate to the Khandala region?
